How to Conquer Math Word Problems

I. Introduction

Math word problems can pose a significant challenge for students, often due to the difficulty in translating the narrative into a math equation. While the mathematical concepts themselves may not be inherently complex, figuring out how to change the words into an equation can be confusing. But guess what? Countless students have had trouble with word problems and learned the right strategies. With the right strategies, you can effectively tackle word problems and achieve a deeper understanding of word problems.

At Genius Plus Academy, we provide top-notch math tuition in Singapore to ensure that our students have all the tools and resources that they need to excel. In this post, we will share 7 steps needed to conquer word problems.

Step 1: Read Carefully and Thrice

Many students often make mistakes or find word problems confusing because they tend to skim through it. Take your time and read the word problem thoroughly at least three times.

Step 2: Identify Key Information

Underline or highlight important details like numbers, keywords (e.g. total, difference, etc.) and even the question itself.

Step 3: Simplify and Rephrase

Try rewording the problem in your own words. This clarifies your understanding and helps identify any missing pieces.

Step 4: Look for Clues

Word problems are full of clues! Look out for words like “total”, “difference”, “increase”, “twice as many”, etc. These signal which math operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) you will likely need.

Step 5: Organise the Information

Organise the information using a model, a table, or diagrams to help you organise the information and see the relationships between the numbers.

Step 6: Translate to Math

Once you understand the problem, translate it into a mathematical equation using variables if needed.

Step 7: Solve and Check

Solve the equation and do not forget to check your workings for any mistakes! Use a calculator if you are allowed to so as to avoid making mistakes.

Only Perfect Practice Makes Perfect!

At Genius Plus Academy, we uphold the philosophy that "only perfect practice makes perfect". The more word problems you solve, the easier it will become to solve word problems. Don’t get discouraged if you get stuck or encounter obstacles at first, and don’t hesitate to ask for help!

II. Conclusion

Realising that you have trouble solving word problems is the first step to conquering them. The next step would be to start practising word problems and familiarising yourselves with the 7 steps listed above. It may be difficult at first, but it will get easier!
