Exam Results: What went wrong (or right)?

As the year comes to an end, your child (or you!) might be dreading to see his or her exam results. Did he or she not have enough time to revise before the exam? Were there questions in the exam paper that your child skipped as he or she did not understand the concepts tested? Or was it an issue of time management?

Perhaps, you might be nodding your head in agreement to all the questions above. So, what are the next steps you should be taking? Genius Plus Mathematics outlines a systematic way you can analyse your child’s results.

  1. Acknowledge that your child has tried his or her best. Or even if he or she did not, at least commend the effort put into the subject. Especially given how challenging it is to adapt to endemic COVID-19, students today definitely deserve a pat on the back for their resilience.

  2. Ask your child what he or she feels about his or her exam results. Some may be content with how they performed while others may feel disheartened. Seek to understand your child and his or her feelings before jumping to conclusions. You might be surprised to find that some would have already actively self-reflected on their results and would like to seek help.

  3. Review the exam paper with your child. Sometimes, the best way to truly understand a subject is to engage in a conversation with another person about the questions tested. If your child can explain why he or she approached the questions in certain ways, it shows some thought processes, or lack thereof, which can be further developed.

  4. Speak to and gather feedback from your child’s educators. As parents, we cannot oversee our child’s learning progress 24/7. Your child’s educators would have better insight into your child’s needs and behaviour in school. From the feedback obtained, you can also decide on your next course of action. (Read our blog post on whether tuition is necessary here!)

Of course, if your child did do well for the previous exams, definitely commend him or her! This is key to building confidence in young learners, and will go a long way in their educational journey. That being said, past results are not a guarantee of future results. As parents, we want the best for our children and this entails that they are prepared for the future.
